YEAR 7 & 8 SPORT

Sport in Years 7–8 focuses on participation, skill development, and introducing students to competitive school sport.

At this level, students have opportunities to represent Rosmini College through school teams, zone day events, and in some cases community club competitions.

School Teams

Rosmini fields intermediate school teams in the following sports:

  • Basketball

  • Volleyball

  • Touch

  • Water Polo

These teams compete in organised school competitions and may also represent the school at regional tournaments.

Events & Zone Days

Many intermediate sports are delivered through North Harbour Year 7–8 Zone Days, where schools from across the region come together to compete in one-day tournaments or events.

Unlike college sport, which often involves weekly fixtures, zone days are usually single competition days held on a school day.

These events give students the opportunity to represent Rosmini College in a range of sports such as athletics, swimming, cross country, rugby, cricket, touch, basketball, futsal, triathlon among many others.

Students are selected or invited to participate depending on the sport and level of interest.

Parents can view upcoming zone events here: North Harbour Y7–8 Zone Sport Events

Students who perform well at zone events may progress to Auckland Interzone competitions, competing against top students from other regions.

Club-Based Sports

For some sports, students participate through local community clubs rather than school teams.

This is common for sports where strong local club competitions already exist. Students are encouraged to join a club and continue developing their skills through those pathways.

Sports typically played through clubs include (click on sport to find out more):

AIMS Games

High performing Rosmini students may also have the opportunity to compete at the AIMS Games, which is held every September in Tauranga & Mt Maunganui.

This national intermediate sporting event brings together students from across New Zealand to compete in a wide range of sports. Participation varies by sport and is subject to team availability and selection.

The 2026 tournament will take place from Saturday 5 September to Friday 11 September 2026.

Expression of Interest – 2026

Expressions of Interest for the 2026 NZ AIMS Games are now open. If your son would like to be considered for selection, please click on the link at the bottom of this page to complete the AIMS Games Expression of Interest Form.

Deadline: Thursday 2nd April 2026

TEAM SPORTS
Rosmini Team Sports Offered (most by invitation only from our top teams):

  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Futsal
  • Hockey
  • Tackle 7s Rugby
  • Water Polo

Each team stays together as a private unit to build camaraderie. Accommodation is reserved strictly for the team and two designated adults (e.g., TIC, manager, or coach). While parents are welcome to attend the games to support the team, this is entirely optional; those who choose to travel must book their own housing independently as there is no space within the team accommodation. Rosmini sets a comprehensive budget covering accommodation, transport, and entry fees. However, food is coordinated and paid for by the team, usually organized by the Team Manager.

INDIVIDUAL SPORTS
There are also Individual Sports opportunities to compete, including: Badminton, BMX, Canoe Sport, Cross Country, Golf, Gymnastics, Hip Hop, Indoor Bowls, Mountain Biking, Orienteering, Para Sports, Rock Climbing, Squash, Surfing, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Yachting

Individual Sports may have restrictions on entry based on rankings, times etc. Please go to the AIMS Games website for information on each Individual Sport entry requirements.

Once we confirm a student’s eligibility for an individual sport, we will send a Sporty form to cover the event entry fees only. For these codes, parents are responsible for providing all accommodation, food, and transportation. Additionally, parents must personally supervise their child for the duration of the tournament.

Participation & Selection
Rosmini College aims to provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to attend. However, entries are dependent on sufficient student interest and the availability of staff or parent volunteers to coach and/or manage teams.

In most cases, students will compete in one sporting code only, although this may vary depending on scheduling and individual circumstances.

Parent & Community Support
The success of our AIMS Games campaign relies heavily on the support of our school community. We ask parents and caregivers to assist where possible, including:

  • Coaching or managing teams
  • Supervising students during the tournament week
  • Travelling with the group and staying in team accommodation
  • Supporting and coordinating fundraising initiatives
  • Assisting with meal coordination and preparation

For team sports, all players, coaches, and managers are required to stay in designated team accommodation for the duration of the tournament. Some individual sports may allow students to stay with their families — this will be confirmed once entries are finalised.

Costs
The estimated cost for team sport participants is approximately $1,100, which covers:

  • Transport
  • Accommodation
  • Tournament entry fees
  • Meals
  • Team apparel
  • General expenses

Costs for individual sports may vary depending on length of stay and accommodation arrangements.
